Porsche Carrera Cup Donington Weekend Report

Charles Rainford, CCK Motorsport, has made the step up to the Pro category of the 2023 Porsche Carrera Cup GB following his dominant 2022 Pro Am Championship and overall win at Brands Hatch last season. The season began last weekend at Donington Park Circuit. Saturday was cool and dry for qualifying but with a busy track it was difficult for Charles to find a clear lap in both his tyre runs. This resulted in a 7th place start overall for Race 1 but encouragingly only 1 tenth off being 4th.
With rain falling all night, Race 1 on Sunday morning was wet to start but the track would be drying throughout the race. With Charles having great pace in the wet he quickly moved up to 5th place from the start and whilst battling his way up to 4th, unfortunately, contact was made with another car causing a puncture. Thankfully he made it back to the pits for a quick front tyre change, but with no safety car for the other stricken Porsche 992 GT3 cup car, he rejoined a lap down. Charles continued to push on, gaining vital data for the next race, finishing P9 in class and 21st overall.
With the heavens opening just before Race 2, Charles had another good start in the wet. Gaining positions off the line he was unfortunately hit by another car in all of the sprays which resulted in a damaged front splitter, severely affecting downforce and grip. Despite this he managed to continue gaining positions throughout the race and, with other cars in the pro category not being able to stay on track, Rainford crossed the line 8th in class.
Overall it was not the weekend we’d hoped or deserved. With the pace over the course of the weekend for podiums luck wasn’t on our side but the focus is already on Brands Hatch in two weeks, historically a great hunting ground for us, where we will be back in the fight.
